Today was my first day running back-to-back days in a while. I ran in the afternoon, it was overcast and not terribly warm. In other words I had favorable running conditions. I ran a little over 3 miles in 32 minutes. First 20 minutes was pretty easy but I really struggled during the last 10-12 minutes. Today I’ll try another 3-5 mile run in preparation for a long training run this coming Sunday.
Postscript – I bought a new pair of Asics Gel-Kayano’s today from Run ‘N Roll on South Dixie Highway in West Palm. They’re pretty much top of the line and you can tell when you lace them up. These will be my half and full marathon shoes. I’ll continue running in my Pearl iZumi’s and alternate between the two but find that the additional cushioning and stability of the Kayano’s will make them long distance shoe. Speaking of Run N’ Roll. Jerry, the proprietor there, is a great guy and gave me tons of advice and tips on running marathons. He’s completed something like 50 of them – a local Boston boy turned South Florida native. In any event the big test is seeing how I fair over a half marathon. He said that it is possible to still get ready for the full in Miami in 2 1/2 months but that I’m pushing it pretty hard. He recommended just finishing the half in Palm Beach, doing another half for Miami ‘with intent’ and then going for the full in Ft. Lauderdale in February, which will give me 3 full months. He also expressed his preference for the Ft. Lauderdale
run over both Palm Beach and Miami because the track in Lauderdale is completely on the beach. Sounds like good advice to me. His other tip was to run tomorrow morning at 6am with the Palm Beach Road Runners. They’ll be running the half marathon route and Jerry recommended that I try to double my typical run of 5 miles under race conditions. They’ll have water and gatorade out along the route and this will give me people to run with as well, which I’m not at all used to. Let’s see if I can drag my ass out of bed at 5AM, scarf down a banana for carb loading and see how far I can make it.
Asics Gel-Kayano Mileage=3 (range 400 to 450 miles)
Pearl iZumi Mileage=20 (300 to 350 miles)
