November 12th, 2006 — Asides, Running
After being sick and then traveling to New York for a business conference my training for the Marathon of the Palm Beaches and Miami marathon haven’t exactly gotten off to a blazing start. Today I got out there. Like they say, all glory comes from daring to begin. I have to tell you it wasn’t easy. I went out when it was too hot, and it has been a few weeks since a long run, but whoa, the weather really kicked my ass. At least, that’s all I hoped it was.
I was only able to run for 46 minutes (a little over 5 miles) and the run almost killed me. After a little of that, even a half marathon seems daunting. I’ve resolved to get out early in the morning OR at night and not try to take on the baking sun. I’m also going to work on doing a modified version of my strength training that will focus on my upper body, since my lower body will get more than enough training from the added running.
I think that my eating and general diet will be critical to both my races and my training. I have no doubt that my eating a bunch of crap food last night had a lot to do with my lack of running energy when I ran at 11:30AM this morning. Garbage in – garbage out.

Next Action is a software tool from BlackBerryBooks.com, a small software developer who writes apps for the BlackBerry handheld device. If David Allen’s Getting Things Done (GTD) organization framework makes you go purr in the night and you can’t live without a BlackBerry then this may be the tool for you. It’s about $40 from a number of online download retailers.

Just recently I posted about putting up my daily del.icio.us links from my travels around the net. I bookmark something I find valuable or interesting pretty much every day. I’ve been doing this for a week or so. I got this all set up and working automagically and then didn’t like how the posts were visually dominating my blog’s center rail, all to show a few links that you may, or may not care about. I can here you saying, heck, I don’t even care about your blog, never mind your links! So, I remedied this by putting the links in my blog sidebar under the “Daily Del.icio.us Links & Quick Takes” section. So, the links will keep populating, and you can spy on the pages I’ve tagged each day with no ugly blog aftermath.

Day 1: marathon training.
Over the last year I’ve had it in my mind to run my first marathon (during occasional moments of insanity of course). Just the other day on a run it came into my head again. I was thinking the Marathon of the Palm Beaches was in January. No problem, plenty of time to train. I look up the official site and the date is much sooner than I remembered – December 3, 2006.
SO I’ve got a month. I’ll say this. I’m not committing to it yet until I’ve done a little more research and talked to the guys and gals at my local running shop to see just how screwed I am. My feeling is that I’m in good shape (I think) so I’ve got a shot at getting prepared in a month. On the other hand, I don’t run distances, and haven’t really ever gone much beyond 10 miles. Beyond my additional research, I’m planning on a half marathon over the actual route this weekend. That will be my decision point to determine if I sign up for a 1/2 marathon or the full jobby.
Don’t wish me luck yet. Save that thought until I’ve committed to one or the other because I’m going to need all the help I can get.
